The "St. Anastasia" island is located in the Burgas bay, 8 km
off the coast. There was a small early Christian cloister on the island
in antiquity, during the early Byzantine period. A monastery was constructed
here in the XI century. It was in the group of Sozopol‘s episcopate. The
convent didn’t function after 1913 and was transformed into a prison in
1921, which was used till 1944. The buildings and the church of the monastery
were announced for monuments of culture. A museum exhibition, devoted
to the history of the island and the riot of 43 politic prisoners, was
organized.
In 2001
the island in announced for nature-archaeological reserve together “St.Ivan”
island and has the statute of public state ownership.
